Historical Overview of the RENFE 277 Series

The RENFE 277 series represents one of the fundamental pillars in the modernization of the Spanish railway during the 1950s. Ordered under the General Electrification Plan, these locomotives were designed and manufactured in the United Kingdom by English Electric and Vulcan Foundry, entering service between 1952 and 1959.

The complete batch consisted of 75 locomotives, originally numbered 7701 to 7775 (later becoming 277-001 to 277-075).

Popularly known as the "Inglesas" (The Englishwomen), these Co'Co' axle layout machines arrived to replace steam traction on the most demanding mountain passes, with the Pajares Pass being their most legendary setting. They also had a significant presence on the lines connecting Santander with the Meseta. Another part of the series (from 7768 to 7777) was assigned to the Córdoba depot from their commissioning until the mid-1960s.

With their 3,000 V overhead line voltage and an output of 3,600 hp, they demonstrated exceptional robustness and mechanical reliability, becoming the symbol of the transition toward railway modernity.
