Historical background of the Electrotren Santa Fe

The 151 “Santa Fe” steam locomotive was one of the most iconic and powerful steam engines in Spain, designed to haul heavy freight trains under particularly demanding conditions. Originally, the Norte Railway Company planned to number them as series 5001 to 5020, although in the end only the first four units (5001 to 5004), built in 1942, carried that numbering. After the creation of RENFE and the reorganisation of the motive power fleet, a new numbering system was introduced in 1943 and the 22 locomotives of the series were renumbered as 151-3101 to 151-3122.

These locomotives were built by La Maquinista Terrestre y Marítima (MTM) and stood out for their enormous tractive effort, which made them for years the most powerful steam freight locomotives in Spain, comparable in performance to major international designs such as North American Mallets or South African Garratts. Their construction also demonstrated the high technical level achieved by the national railway industry during a difficult period.

Over the years, they received various upgrades, including the installation of electric lighting, automatic coal loading systems and the oil-firing conversion of part of the fleet (18 locomotives), a logical adaptation due to their high coal consumption.
