The 596 series railcars, nicknamed "Tamagochi," were the result of a complete remodeling of the 593 railcars manufactured by FIAT, which by the early 1990s were already showing signs of wear. RENFE's intention was to create a lightweight railcar to serve low-traffic lines, so it was decided to repurpose the motor coaches of the 593 series as independent vehicles.
The remodeling was carried out at the Valladolid workshops between 1997 and 1999, completing a series of 25 units.
