The 596 series railcars of RENFE were built by converting the two motor cars with cabins of a series 593 railcar into a group of 25 single-coach railcars with two driving cabins. The reconstruction work was carried out at the MIT in Valladolid, where a new cabin was installed at the cabinless end, the interior was redesigned for greater comfort and openness, and the diesel engine transmission and control systems were improved. The first six trains retained the original bodywork, but the rest of the series received modernized fairings for a more contemporary appearance. These railcars have always been used on low-traffic, low-occupancy lines, providing Regional and Regional Express services. Currently, these units operate on routes such as Murcia-Cartagena, Zaragoza-Huesca-Canfranc, and Vigo-Valença do Minho. They are also used as reinforcements on the Vigo-Pontevedra service.
