Historical overview of RENFE Class 276
The RENFE Class 276 locomotives were a group of powerful electric locomotives built from the 1950s onwards as part of the modernization of Spain’s motive power fleet after the post-war period. They were derived from the Swiss SBB Ae 6/6 design, adapted to the needs of the Spanish railway network and manufactured under license by national companies.
These locomotives were designed to operate under 3,000 V DC and stood out for their great reliability, robustness, and hauling capacity, becoming key units for both heavy freight trains and long-distance passenger services.
With their characteristic straight-lined silhouette and six powered axles (Co’Co’ wheel arrangement), the 276s were a common sight for decades on Spain’s main electrified lines. They remained in service until the late 20th century, earning a prominent place in the history of Spanish electric traction.
