Each of the playable nations has its own opportunities and challenges.
Europa Universalis: The Price of Power is a board game that expands the legacy of the Europa Universalis computer game series by Paradox Interactive. Those familiar with this series with over 20 years of history will immediately recognize several of the concepts in this board game. However, it is not necessary to know the computer game to enjoy the board version. The starting point of the first era of Europa Universalis: The Price of Power is the year 1444, after the Battle of Varna, where the Ottomans achieved a decisive victory against the combined Christian crusader forces. Europe is about to leave the Middle Ages behind and enter the Modern Age. The world is about to experience changes like never before. There will no longer be civilizations in different parts of the globe isolated or with limited or no contact with the outside world. Irreversibly, the lives of people all over the planet will become entangled in a complex web of power struggles, imperialist expansion, colonization, trade, and cultural exchange — all bringing wars and epidemics with their disastrous consequences. At the same time, science, political philosophy, and technology will begin to progress at a pace never before seen in human history. This will change warfare, forms of government, religious institutions, and the daily lives of ordinary people in ways no one could have foreseen.
While some states will flourish in this environment and even achieve global dominance, other civilizations will struggle to the point of near extinction. Much of what the colonial and imperialist powers of that era did in their struggle for glory and wealth is, of course, more than questionable from today’s perspective. Knowledge of the many key events and developments of this period is crucial to understanding how we have reached the present as we know it. The game focuses on the European powers of the time, not because we endorse what they did, but because it is the only way to help us understand some of their decisions. Perhaps we can better see how or why parts of history unfolded as they did, giving players the freedom to tackle hypothetical yet realistic scenarios within this era. This is a lot for a board game, and we do not intend to approach an extreme simulation. Still, the game allows players to immerse themselves in this fascinating period and guide their kingdoms through a large part of history. Facing challenges based on historical events of the era, they will have to make difficult decisions and negotiate with their opponents so that their kingdoms grow and prosper.
Europa Universalis: The Price of Power is a board game of empire building, conquest, diplomacy, and exploration in the Early Modern era. Each player will lead one of the great European nations to glory or downfall, depending on their ability to make the right decisions and manage the available resources. During the game, players will use their monarchical power and ducats to perform actions such as building armed contingents, waging battles, forging diplomatic relations, and developing aspects of their societies’ internal machinery. Managing diplomatic relations between players is also an essential aspect of the game. The winner is the player who ends the game with the most prestige. Many paths lead to victory, as prestige can be earned in different ways depending on the aspects one chooses to focus on.
