The 21st century has arrived on the island of Catan. The agrarian society founded by Viking settlers is now a thing of the past. In addition to the traditional resources, the inhabitants of Catan need energy to sustain the growth and prosperity of their society. Pollution from fossil fuels is an increasing threat, causing natural disasters and hindering resource production. New, cleaner energy technologies are available, but they are more expensive to build. Players must decide whether to invest in these new energies or to stick to the cheaper fossil fuels, risking an early disaster for the entire island. The choice—and the responsibility—is yours!

Designed by Klaus and Benjamin Teuber, Catan Energies features illustrations by Ian O’Toole. It supports games for 3 or 4 players, ages 12 and up, lasting around 90 minutes. The goal of the game is to reach 10 victory points or to be the player with the most renewable power plants built once the event discs run out. Get ready for electrifying games!
Catan Energies is based on the mechanics of classic Catan but elevates the gaming experience. At the beginning of each turn, players draw event discs from a bag and place them on their corresponding track on the board. Once the track is full, the events are triggered, affecting the game in various ways by blocking resources or penalizing certain players.
Players must also monitor their ecological footprint, which is displayed on their personal boards after building settlements and cities. They may also construct power plants, both fossil-fueled and renewable. With the energy produced by these plants, players can perform various actions.
What type of power plant will you invest in? Will you choose a cheaper fossil-fuel plant, or opt for a renewable-energy plant that costs a bit more? Think carefully, because your decisions will shape the course of the game! You’ll need energy to prosper, but if pollution rises too much, the game may end prematurely.
The new elements such as power plants and energy give the Catan universe a fresh twist, offering not only a new theme but also an exciting and unique gameplay experience.
