Scythe is a board game set in an alternate history of the 1920s. It is a time of farming and war, broken hearts and rusted gears, innovation and valor.
In Scythe, each player takes on the role of a fallen leader attempting to restore their honor and guide their faction to power in Eastern Europe. Players conquer territories, enlist recruits, gather resources, gain villagers, build structures, and deploy monstrous mechs. Each player begins the game with different resources (strength, coins, movement capabilities, and popularity), the unique abilities of their chosen faction, and hidden objectives. The starting positions of each faction are carefully balanced to enhance the game’s asymmetric nature. Scythe gives players near-total control over their own destiny. In addition to hidden objectives, the only elements of luck are the encounter cards drawn when interacting with citizens of newly explored lands and the combat cards that provide a temporary boost in battle. Even then, combat itself is always a matter of player choice rather than chance.
Scythe uses a continuous action-selection system (no rounds or phases), keeping the game flowing and minimizing downtime between turns. Although direct conflict is possible, there is no player elimination, as units cannot be destroyed or killed. Every aspect of Scythe involves engine-building: players can upgrade their actions to become more efficient, construct buildings to strengthen their position on the map, enlist new recruits to enhance their faction’s abilities, deploy mechs to deter opponents from invading, and expand their territory to harvest more and varied resources. The order in which players develop their engines ensures that each game feels unique, even when playing with the same faction.
