Historical overview of RENFE 12600 series coaches
The 12600 series consisted of 65 units, the result of a major refurbishment of the former 8000 series coaches. Carried out between September 1989 and December 1990 at the Malaga TCR workshops, this upgrade aimed to modernize the Long Distance fleet to standards of comfort similar to the 10000 series.
These were configured as couchette coaches with 10 compartments of 6 berths each, featuring air conditioning and a fully renovated interior. Externally, they stood out for their fixed aluminum-framed windows and the installation of pivoting-sliding doors, replacing the original folding doors.
They mainly served in Estrella and Diurno trains, wearing iconic liveries such as the Estrella (cream and brown) and later the Largo Recorrido colors.
