Historical overview of RENFE 9600 series coaches

The RENFE 9600 series coaches entered service between 1984 and 1985. This series is notable for its ribbed roof design. Internally, the 9600 coaches feature a side corridor with separate compartments.

The 9600 series was considered a transition towards more modern rolling stock, meeting the standards of other European countries. The 60 BBL-9600 couchette coaches were closer to the 10000 series in terms of finish and modernity than previous day-service coaches, forming a distinct group.

They were built under SNCF license, based on the B10c10ux type with ten compartments of six berths each, which can be converted into eight seats for day use. The windows are functional (operable) and they feature pivoting doors. Externally, they were decorated in the same style as the 10000 series, including the characteristic ribbed roof and side grilles.
