The 596 series railcars, nicknamed "Tamagochi," were the result of a complete refurbishment carried out on the 593 railcars manufactured by FIAT, which by the early 1990s were already showing signs of wear. RENFE’s goal was to create a lightweight railcar for low-traffic lines, so the motor cars of the 593 series were repurposed as independent vehicles.
