German Federal Railroad (DB) express steam locomotive, road number 06 002. In a fictitious version without streamlining, with a type 2´3 T38 coal tender, dual headlights, Witte smoke deflectors, and an inductive magnet on one side. The locomotive was based in Hamm and looks as it did in 1952.

Historical Overview

The German railways' Class 06 represented the most ambitious, yet tragic, attempt to create the ultimate passenger steam locomotive just before World War II. Designed by the legendary Krupp firm in 1939, only two prototypes ever left their workshops, built with the purpose of hauling extremely heavy passenger trains at speeds of up to 140 kilometers per hour through routes with challenging gradients. Visually, they were imposing and futuristic machines, equipped with a distinctive aerodynamic streamlining (In this idealized Trix version, the streamlining and aerodynamic parts have been removed.) that concealed their colossal 4-8-4 wheel arrangement, immediately becoming the largest and most powerful locomotives in all of Germany.

However, their impressive design on paper soon clashed with the harsh reality of the tracks. The Class 06 turned out to be an engineering failure due to its excessive size, which caused frequent derailments on the sharp curves of the German rail network, and a severe defect in its boilers, which suffered cracks and leaks under high pressures and thermal stress. With the outbreak of the war that same year, all resources were diverted toward the war machine, leaving no time or budget to fix their design flaws and condemning the two prototypes to spend most of the conflict sidelined in workshops and depots.

Following the end of the war, the new railway administration evaluated the possibility of rebuilding them and putting them into service, but the costs were astronomical for a nation in ruins. Since diesel technology and track electrification were advancing rapidly, repairing these complex steam giants no longer made economic sense. Thus, in 1951, both locomotives were finally scrapped, putting a sad and premature end to the history of a steel titan that was born at the worst possible moment and today survives only in period photographs and blueprints.

Features

The locomotive features a digital decoder and extensive sound functions. It features controlled, high-efficiency propulsion with a flywheel, mounted in the boiler. One axle directly driven, three axles coupled via side rods. Traction tires. Both the locomotive and the tender are constructed mostly of metal. The locomotive features a factory-installed smoke unit with dynamic smoke exhaust that varies with the speed. The dual headlights change with the direction of travel, will work in conventional operation, and can be controlled digitaly. The cab lighting and the firebox flicker can be controlled separately in digital operation. Maintenance-free warm white and red LEDs are used for the lighting. A buffer capacitor is included. There is a close coupling with a guide mechanism between the locomotive and the tender. There is a close coupler with a guide mechanism in a NEM pocket at the back of the tender. The buffer height on the locomotive and tender conforms to the NEM standard. The minimum radius for operation is 437.5 mm / 17-1/4" (Radius 2). With slight limitations, operation on Radius 1 is also possible. Piston rod protection sleeves and brake hoses are included.
