Historical overview of the 591.400 «Ferrobús» diesel multiple unit:

Following the success of these new Ferrobús-type trains, RENFE placed a new order for more units in 1966, which included several differences compared to the first Ferrobuses. In this case, four-car sets were chosen, consisting of two motor cars with cabs at the ends and two intermediate trailer cars, instead of the motor car with cab, trailer, and driving trailer configuration of the earlier Ferrobuses. Internal improvements, such as pneumatic door opening and closing, were included. This new arrangement increased both power and capacity. Thirty-four trains of this series were built, numbered as FER/FRI 401 to 434 and FER/FRI 435 to 468; this numbering was due to each semi-train, consisting of a motor car with cab and a trailer, being considered an independent unit. Another change introduced in these trains was the use of the 150 hp Pegaso 9034 diesel engine.

In 1967, a further order was placed for more trains, which also varied in their configuration, being formed solely of two motor cars with cabs. These 27 trains formed the FER 469 to 522 series, boasting 600 hp of power for only two cars.
