Historical overview of the 591.500 «Ferrobús» diesel multiple unit:
The popular 591 series Ferrobuses were ubiquitous across practically the entire Spanish rail network for years. Given the very limited extent of electrification on many lines, nearly every corner of the country could count on commuter or regional train services provided by these endearing railcars. Until then, most commuter or regional services were carried out, in the best of cases, with railcars from the first half of the century.
With a power output of 300 hp and a maximum speed of 90 km/h, they represented a milestone in the modernization of RENFE's rolling stock in the 1960s, revolutionizing short and medium-distance travel.
Although the entire 591 series was officially retired in 1988, several years later two two-car compositions were recovered to return to service. In this case, the newly created U.N. de Regionales (Regional Business Unit) ordered the repair and tuning of two units from the 500 subseries, decorating them with their own livery and putting them back into service.
