Speed as a Goal: From the 269 to the 400 Series

In the late 80s and early 90s, RENFE required locomotives capable of reliably reaching 160 km/h for its long-distance services. To achieve this, 31 units from the 269.200 series were selected and underwent critical modifications:

• New speed reduction gears were installed.
• They were equipped with dual-control monomotor bogies (although they mostly operated alone).
• Braking and safety systems were improved for the high-speed requirements of the era.

The «Largo Recorrido» Livery (Yellow and Gray)

This livery, popularly known as "Taxi" (due to its resemblance to the taxis in cities like Barcelona) or simply "Gray/Yellow," marked the end of the unified green/yellow era.

• Visual Identity: It was designed to unify the image of the "Largo Recorrido" (Long Distance) business unit. The locomotive body featured a dark gray (bluish-gray) with a prominent yellow stripe that wrapped around the ends.
• Prominence: The 269-400s in these colors were the queens of electrified lines, hauling legendary trains such as the Talgo III, Talgo IV, and conventional coach trains like the "Estrella" across Spain.
• Legacy: It was a decoration that conveyed modernity and power in a Renfe that was beginning to split into commercial sectors before the massive arrival of the AVE.
