At last we have perfected the power of steam, and now we can use it to our advantage! We live in an era of unprecedented progress, and new steam-powered inventions are developing faster than ever. Cities grow, trade flourishes, and we are building our most ambitious machine to date, a gigantic contraption that will bring even more progress to the city. Yes, some trees are being cut down and the river doesn’t flow as strongly as before, but there is still plenty of vegetation and water, and we can use the extra space to expand our city. Who cares these days about those old legends of ancestral spirits? Designed by Dani García (creator of acclaimed games such as Barcelona and Arborea) and illustrated by Marina Vidal, Daitoshi can be enjoyed solo or with up to 4 players, ages 14 and up, in games lasting about 2 hours. Players compete to earn the highest number of victory points over a series of rounds. On your turn, you will either produce goods in your factory (thus gaining resources) or move your magnate to a new district on the central board to perform an action. These actions, however, always impact the environment, damaging the underground, mountains, forest, or river. In return, you will hire new workers and be able to expand the city, electrify a district, trade with other cities, or acquire new patents to improve your factory and thus produce more in later turns. These actions not only help you in your pursuit of recognition (in other words, victory points to win), but also benefit all the inhabitants of the great city. You can even contribute to building a gigantic project, the megamachine. Some forests may be cut down and some rivers may dry up, but in your generosity you will help the workers displaced from those areas by offering them new jobs in your service. Old legends suggest that forests and rivers are guarded by Yôkai, but progress cannot be stopped because of a few old fairy tales. Still, just in case, it would be wise to participate in some reforestation projects and conceal your role in the exploitation of natural resources. Ideal for experienced players, Daitoshi is part of the Kemushi Saga, a thematic universe that encompasses several board games such as Bitoku, Bamboo, Sand, Yokai Sketch, and Silk. With evocative artwork inspired by references such as Studio Ghibli films, the different games are like pieces of a grand puzzle that, once assembled, tell a great story.
