Emil Blonsky was attempting to steal secret documents from a military base when he was struck by a massive dose of gamma radiation intended to destroy the Hulk. An unknown mutation saved him from certain death but transformed him into the Abomination, a grotesque and colossal creature with strength and resilience capable of rivaling those of the Hulk himself. The two have clashed on numerous occasions, leaving a trail of destruction across the planet.

Dirk Garthwaite operated under the name Wrecker until Thor defeated him, imprisoning his powers within an enchanted crowbar. In prison he met Dr. Eliot Franklin, Henry Camp, and Brian Calusky, who helped him escape and recover the crowbar. During a storm, the four held the artifact at the same time, and a lightning bolt released its power, dividing it among them. Thus were born Thunderball, Bulldozer, and Piledriver, forming together with Wrecker the dreaded Wrecking Crew, a team of supervillains specialized in chaos and destruction.
