Flames of War: M4 Sherman Armoured Platoon - US Marine tanks. BATTLE FRONT UBX99

Flames of War: M4 Sherman Armoured Troop Product Contents

The M4 Sherman Armoured Troop brings one of World War II's most iconic American medium tanks to your Flames of War forces. This set focuses on the M4A2 Sherman—the diesel-powered variant issued to the United States Marine Corps to deliver heavy armored punch during Pacific Theater campaigns.

The box set includes 5 M4 Sherman tanks armed with 75mm guns along with a decal sheet to personalize your vehicles. Their 75mm main guns offered vastly superior high-explosive firepower compared to the M3 Stuart when reducing fortified enemy positions, while easily outmatching contemporary Japanese armor.

How to Deploy the M4 Sherman Armoured Troop in Flames of War

The M4 Sherman provides substantial armor protection and versatile firepower for US forces. Its 75mm dual-purpose gun allows players to field medium tanks in their direct infantry support role, particularly when assaulting heavily fortified Japanese defenses.

In the Pacific Theater, Shermans were tasked with far more than tank-on-tank duels: they served as indispensable bunker-busters, crushing fortified pillboxes, field fortifications, and entrenched strongpoints holding up Marine riflemen. Their combination of thick armor plate and heavy high-explosive firepower made them essential anchor units for island assaults.

In your Flames of War games, this platoon allows you to deploy a formidable armored force fully integrated into your US Marine army. Pair them with infantry rifle companies and support weapons sections to build a balanced combined-arms force capable of taking on any objective. Consult your army rulebook and force diagrams to field them in your games.

The M4A2 Sherman in the Pacific War

Early combat on Guadalcanal highlighted the firepower limitations of the M3 Stuart light tank against dug-in defenders. Even canister rounds lacked the explosive power needed to reduce heavy log bunkers and stone pillboxes, prompting the Marines to request heavier armor.

In October 1942, the US Marine Corps received twenty-two M4 Shermans for evaluation, leading to widespread adoption across Marine tank battalions in 1943. US Marine forces were equipped with the diesel-engine M4A2 variant, featuring a 75mm gun and up to three inches of sloped front armor.

The 75mm gun made quick work of Japanese tanks while delivering devastating high-explosive rounds against bunkers and field fortifications. Consequently, the Sherman became the premier armored support vehicle for Marines across the Pacific island-hopping campaigns.
