History of the "Nord Express"

The Bombay-Express was an international luxury train inaugurated by CIWL in 1897.

It emerged during the height of British colonial rule as part of the transcontinental Europe–India route. CIWL designed it to connect with the steamships of Peninsular & Oriental (P&O) in Marseille, thereby linking with Bombay (now Mumbai) and Calcutta. It became part of the famous “Overland Mail” imperial route. Railway literature highlights this service alongside the Peninsular-Express and the “India Trunk” as CIWL specials tied to British mail in India.

The basic route connected Calais (on the English Channel coast) with Marseille (Arenc station) in Provence. From Calais, travelers could cross to England or arrive from Paris, and in Marseille, they would board ships bound for India.
