Historical overview of RENFE 352 series diesel locomotives

The 352 series locomotives, originally designated as 2000-T, were acquired by RENFE in the mid-1960s with a very specific purpose: to haul the new and innovative Talgo III trains. Manufactured by the German firm Krauss-Maffei, these machines quickly became an icon of Spanish railway modernization thanks to their characteristic single-cab aerodynamic design.

Equipped with a Maybach power plant and Mekydro hydraulic transmission, these B-B configuration locomotives stood out for their light weight and high power-to-weight ratio. For decades, they were responsible for the most prestigious long-distance services on the network, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h and demonstrating exceptional reliability.

Their elegant red and silver livery marked a golden era in Spanish railways. After more than thirty years of impeccable service, the last unit of the series was withdrawn from circulation in 2002, leaving an indelible legacy among railway enthusiasts and collectors.
