Cities Board Game Contents
In Cities, you step into the shoes of an urban planner tasked with transforming a neighborhood into an attractive, functional, and bustling city district. Throughout the game, you must balance park zones, water features, and building structures to construct a neighborhood that satisfies various scoring objectives.
Designed by Steve Finn and Phil Walker-Harding and illustrated by Jorge Tabanera, Cities blends tile placement, drafting, and pattern building into an accessible experience with rich strategic depth.
During the game, you will visit eight world-famous cities: Sydney, Venice, New York, Barcelona, Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Mexico City, and Buenos Aires. Each setup presents unique municipal challenges as you strive to design the ultimate city district.
How to Play Cities
The game takes place over 8 rounds (or 4 rounds in a 2-player game). In each round, you send your workers to draft different components for your neighborhood: scoring cards, city tiles, feature tokens, and building blocks.
City tiles feature designated spaces for parks, water, and construction. You must place building blocks onto matching colored spaces, stacking them to erect skyscrapers up to 4 stories high. Spatial layout and efficient land use are crucial to maximizing your district's potential.
Alongside building construction, you must monitor scoring cards and city achievements. Fulfilling target objectives and orchestrating synergies between your city elements will be key to securing the highest score by game's end.
Urban Planning and Construction
Cities creates a dynamic tension between your architectural vision and the resources available in the drafting pool. Drafting decisions require continuous tactical adaptation, while the placement of buildings, parks, and waterways dictates your scoring avenues.
Variable city setups ensure high replayability, challenging players to discover new optimization strategies every match. The result is an accessible board game where spatial planning and efficiency take center stage.
Gameplay Impressions
Cities shines by combining vibrant artwork with easy-to-learn mechanics and engaging tactical choices. Watching your 3D district rise from the player board is deeply satisfying as every tile and building block feeds into your overall master plan.
Its brisk play time and clear rules make it an ideal choice for families looking for a game with strategic weight, as well as hobby gamers who enjoy tile-placement and spatial puzzle games.
