Expand The White Castle with a new board and more actions at your disposal!
Matcha adds a wealth of components that will bring variability to your games: a new bridge with its own dice, new spaces to gain influence (the tea house) and gather resources (the pond pavilion), new clan members (the geishas), and an extra resource, the chasen. You will also have an extra turn to try to gain the maximum number of influence points.
Created by Sheila Santos and Israel Cendrero (the duo known as Llama Dice, authors of The Red Cathedral) with evocative artwork by Joan Guardiet, The White Castle: Matcha is the first expansion for The White Castle. Just as in the base game, players aim to accumulate the highest number of influence points by moving clan members to different areas of the castle. This expansion adds a fourth group of pawns to the personal domain, the geishas, who will be placed in the new tea house spaces. The tea ceremony lies at the heart of Japanese culture, embodying the fundamental concepts of hospitality, respect, and Zen philosophy. Tea, imported from China in the early 12th century, was believed to solve the health problems of Buddhist monks who drank it. Over the years, the tea ceremony evolved to offer samurai a space of calm, away from battle. Master Sen no Rikyu played a key role in transforming the tea ceremony into a symbol of status and later into a cultural, religious, and political negotiation space in Japan. Thus, the tea ceremony ritual is not only about hospitality, but also about respect and political intrigue.
Throughout the game, having your clan members well positioned in the Chashitsu (the tea house) will allow you to gain greater influence in the Himeji court. And that’s not all, since you will also gain an additional action each round. Thus, the available actions in the game increase from 9 to 12.
Are you ready to return to Himeji Castle and master the subtleties of the tea ceremony?
*Inside the box of The White Castle: Matcha you will find a small envelope with five loose cards. Use them to replace their counterparts, which you will find in the main card deck. This is due to a small graphic error.
