El Grande returns… through the grand entrance!
This special edition, featuring updated artwork on the box, board, and cards by Stefan Sonnberger, also includes a revised rulebook, new components, and two mini-expansions, The New Regency and Power Shift. El Grande is a true classic, designed by Wolfgang Kramer and Richard Ulrich, which won the prestigious German Spiel des Jahres in 1996. It supports 2 to 5 players, ages 12 and up, with a playtime of around 90 minutes.
El Grande is the ultimate area control game: players take on the roles of Spanish nobles in the 15th century, competing to have the most knights in the various regions on the map, earning more points if they have more knights than others. For nearly 700 years, the Iberian Peninsula was plagued by conflicts between Christian and Muslim rulers. Ancient Roman Hispania was divided into several kingdoms, counties, provinces, and an emirate. In addition to Arabs and Christians, Basques, Galicians, and Catalans also competed for supremacy in different territories. The high nobility, known as the Grandes of Spain, play a crucial role in tipping the balance, sending their knights to conquer new regions. With every castle they occupy and defend, their influence grows. Who will emerge victorious and become the greatest of all?
Games are played over nine rounds. In each round, players select one of their 13 power cards to determine turn order as well as the number of knights they can move from the general supply to their personal court. On a turn, the player chooses one of five action cards to deploy knights on the map and activate various effects, ranging from bonus scoring opportunities to changes in the board setup. Usually, players can only place their knights in regions adjacent to the one containing the king’s pawn. The only strict rule in El Grande is that nothing can enter or leave the king’s region. One of the five action cards, always available each round, allows moving the king to a new region. The other four action cards vary from round to round. One of the most striking elements of El Grande is the tower where players can drop knights to
In this new edition, the tower features a more robust design and a new visual identity. This edition also includes custom boxes for each player’s components, a new design for the action cards and board, with clear and easy-to-understand iconography, and two mini-expansions based on cards that enhance replayability and provide new challenges for those who have already played the original edition. El Grande is an essential family game for any collection. It laid the foundation for the area majority mechanic in modern board games, where players compete for greater presence in specific territories to score more points. It works both as an introductory game for newcomers or those seeking fresh challenges and as a strategy-heavy experience for aiming at maximum points. A unique opportunity to rediscover a classic that defined an era, now with updated, polished, and beautiful design.
