Data sheet
Marrakech is a family strategy game in which you will become a rug merchant determined to achieve the highest possible profit in the bazaar of Marrakech. You will have to place your rugs cleverly, ensure they remain visible at the end of the game, and charge your rivals whenever Assam, the market organizer, finishes his movement on your rugs.
The board will gradually fill up with the players' rugs, which can be partially covered by others. At the same time, you will have to manage your dirhams to finish the game with the greatest fortune.
On each turn, you will have to perform three actions: move Assam, pay a toll if applicable, and place one of your rugs.
First, you will decide which direction you want to orient Assam, and then you will roll the die to determine how many spaces he advances. Movement is limited by the edge of the board, but Assam continues following the path defined by the grid.
If Assam ends his movement on another player's rug, you will have to pay them an amount of dirhams. The payment depends on the size of the connected group of rugs of that color occupying the tile where Assam is located.
After resolving Assam's movement and any corresponding payment, you will have to place one of your rugs adjacent to him. Rugs occupy two spaces on the board and can be placed next to other rugs or over part of them.
Placement is one of the keys to the game. A good rug can increase the visible surface area of your color, cover part of a rival's rugs, or create an area that allows you to collect a larger sum when Assam passes through it again.
Assam's movement ensures that players' decisions are continuously connected. When a player finishes their movement on one of your rugs, they will have to pay you a toll.
Because of this, you will not only need to think about where to place your own rugs, but also about how their position might affect Assam's path. Securing a large area of your color can prove very profitable if the merchant ends up there.
Rugs can be placed partially over others already present on the board. This allows positions to shift throughout the entire game, meaning an area that seemed safe can end up covered by a rival.
At the end of the game, only the parts of your rugs that remain visible count. You will have to find the balance between occupying new spaces, protecting your areas, and taking advantage of the opportunities left by other players' rugs.
The game ends when all players have placed their rugs. At that moment, each player's visible rugs are counted and added to the money they hold.
The player who achieves the highest combined amount of visible rugs and dirhams will be the winner and become the most prosperous merchant in Marrakech.
Marrakech combines very simple rules with constant interaction. Assam's movement introduces an element of chance, but deciding how to orient the merchant before rolling the die allows you to attempt to direct his path toward the areas that interest you most.
The ability to partially cover rugs also causes the board to change throughout the entire match. Each placement can improve your position, reduce a rival's visible surface area, or create a particularly profitable zone.
Its rug market theme, tactile fabric components, and accessible rules make it an especially easy title to bring to the table with families and groups of players with varying levels of experience.
