Historical review of the 1216 006 locomotive
The 1216 006 locomotive belongs to the Siemens ES64U4 series, commercially known as Taurus III. It is one of the most advanced machines of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), designed for high-speed international passenger and freight transport. Its main feature is being a multi-system locomotive. This allows it to operate under four different electrical systems, crossing borders between Austria, Germany, Italy, and Slovenia without the need to change traction. This versatility has made it the backbone of the Brenner corridor, seamlessly connecting Central Europe with Northern Italy.
The 1216 series is world-famous for holding the speed record for conventional locomotives, reaching 357 km/h in 2006. Although unit 006 performs its regular commercial services at a maximum speed of 230 km/h, it shares the same technological DNA that achieved that historic feat of railway engineering.
